File Checksum Verifier

Calculate a local file’s SHA-256 or SHA-512 checksum and compare it with an expected value.

Maximum 50 MiB (52,428,800 bytes). Empty files are supported. The entire file is read into memory.

SHA-256 uses 64 hexadecimal characters; SHA-512 uses 128. Letter case and surrounding whitespace do not affect comparison.

How to verify a file checksum

  1. Select the local file you want to check.
  2. Choose the same algorithm used by the source of the expected checksum.
  3. Paste that checksum, if available, and select Calculate & verify.
  4. Review the match result. Copy the result or download the text report.

The checksum is calculated from the file’s exact bytes, not its name or a text interpretation. Changing a single byte will generally change the checksum. A match against an untrusted expected value does not prove the file is authentic or safe; this tool does not scan for malware.

This tool processes the selected file in your browser. It does not submit the file or expected checksum to a conversion service. It requires HTTPS and browser support for Web Crypto. Files are limited to 50 MiB because the browser’s digest interface reads the complete input into memory.
